| Das Wochenende / The Weekend (2007) - - Das Wochenende -- The Weekend in English -- is a sign that illuminates from Friday afternoon until late Sunday night. (The sign contains a radio clock and receives accurate day and time data from a transmitter in Frankfurt.) The sign acts as a visible reminder that it is the weekend, and that the weekend provides an opportunity to live differently from the rest of the week. Increasingly, markers of temporal structure, such as a weekend marked by chiming church bells and quiet streets, are being replaced by a 24 hour, always open, connected, and available society. The "Das Wochenende" light serves as an artificial substitute of these temporal patterns and reminds us of the importance they play in adding diversity to our experiences. The first protoype sign is permanently installed in Akademie Solitude, an artist residency program housed in a castle near Stuttgart, Germany.
